Thantasy: <The next afternoon, Jayne sits in her livingroom, dialing the hospital personnel office on the telephone. The tv is on, tuned to TCM, but the sound is turned almost completely down. The movie, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, has been on for just a few minutes.>

Thantasy: <Phone ringing...>

Cardaniel80: [Secretary] (Click) Personnel office.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Hello, this is Jayne Harrison....

Cardaniel80: [Secretary] Oh, yes, Miss Harrison. Still no word from Miss Jenkins.

Thantasy: [Jayne] OH!

Thantasy: [Jayne] Really!

Thantasy: [Jayne] She never sent for her last check?

Cardaniel80: [Secretary] No, it's a little unusual. She must really be busy, I guess. We'll pass along your message as soon as we hear from her.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Well, you say she did send a letter of formal resignation?

Cardaniel80: [Secretary] Well, not exactly. It's a typed fax. I guess that's sort of formal.

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Watching the first Gene Kelley-Donald O'Connor dance number in the movie. "Fit As a Fiddle."> Oh, but you've kept it on file, I trust.

Cardaniel80: [Secretary] Yes. It doesn't say much. Just about a family emergency, and she didn't know how long she'd be gone so she needed to resign.

Cardaniel80: [Secretary] Was she really a good friend of yours?

Thantasy: [Jayne] Hmmm. No, I just knew her casually, mostly a friend of a friend. <Pause> Well, I should be back to work full-time next week if all goes well with my exam today.....

Cardaniel80: [Secretary] Oh, I wish you luck!

Thantasy: [Jayne] and I expect that it will because.....

Thantasy: [Jayne] I feel FIT AS A FIDDLE!

Cardaniel80: [Secretary] That's great! Dr. Haney is a little... well, arrogant, but he does do a good job. That's just between you and me.

Cardaniel80: (Jennifer, Dr. Haney's receptionist) Oh hi, Miss Harrison. Dr. Haney is running just a few minutes late, but it shouldn't be too long.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Okay. I'll just have a seat and wait, I guess.

Thantasy: [Jayne] By the way......

Thantasy: [Jayne] Do you know a nurse Christine Jenkins?

Cardaniel80: [Jennifer] Oh, yes... she assists with Dr. Haney sometimes.

Thantasy: [Jayne] I understand she left town. Do you know anything about where she went?

Cardaniel80: [Jennifer] Oh! I knew I hadn't seen her for awhile. I didn't realize she'd left town.

Cardaniel80: [Jennifer] You could ask Dr. Haney, I'm sure he'd know.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Hmmm. <Dead end here, I guess>

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Sits, picks up magazine.>

Cardaniel80: (Patient comes out of the inner office, nods at Jayne and leaves.)

Cardaniel80: (Nurse opens door to usual examination room, empty.)

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Walks into examination room.>

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Hopes that Mavis has been a good girl, more or less.>

Cardaniel80: (Jayne jumps up on the hard narrow couch they always seem to have in these rooms.)

Cardaniel80: (Covered with tissue to keep it sanitary.)

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Dangles legs over edge>

Cardaniel80: (Hears Lon's voice outside door.) I'll see you in two weeks then, Mr. Taylor.

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Straightens up.>

Cardaniel80: (Mumbled voices of Taylor and Jennifer setting up appointment.)

Cardaniel80: (Door opens) How's my best girl doing?

Thantasy: [Jayne] Well, I don't know how she is, but I'm just fine. Feeling great. <Will he ever give up? But, really, do I want him to? It is, well, flattering, after all.>

Cardaniel80: [Lon] Well, you know the drill by now. Take your blouse off and I'll attach the leads [heart monitor], and then you get yourself up on the treadmill.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Okay, time for my hamster imitation

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Takes off blouse.>

Cardaniel80: [Lon] I'll give you an acorn at the end if you're good.

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Prepares to have electrodes attached.>

Cardaniel80: [Lon] (Attaches heart monitor leads. Surprisingly, does this in a businesslike way, not really playing around.)

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Thinking, well, GOOD, maybe he found a girlfriend...>

Cardaniel80: [Lon] Up you go! Let's go for a brisk walk.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Okay. Watch my smoke!

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Gets up on the treadmill.>

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Starts walking.>

Cardaniel80: [Lon] ... (About ten minutes pass.) How are things going at work? (Watching monitor. Jayne is slightly winded, a little sweaty, but feeling okay.)

Thantasy: [Jayne] Well, this light duty is kind of embarrassing...

Thantasy: [Jayne] Asking for help for every little thing...

Cardaniel80: [Lon] I think we'll be able to fix that.

Thantasy: [Jayne] I think some of the LP's have just about had it with my state of being an invalid.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] (Smiling) I'm sure you'll wish you were back on half days in a week or so.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Shall I pick up the pace a little?

Cardaniel80: [Lon] Sure, let's go a little faster...

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Walks faster...>

Cardaniel80: [Lon] (After another five minutes.} Okay, stop. Climb up on the couch and rest a bit. I want to see how long it takes your heart to get back to normal.

Thantasy: [Jayne] You know, you could set up a cyclotron like Mack Sennett used in the silent movies to give the illusion of passing scenery.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] (Smiling) Hey, good idea.

Thantasy: [Jayne] <That reference means nothing to Lon>

Cardaniel80: [Lon] Okay, just lay back on the couch. I just have one more test.

Cardaniel80: (You feel a sudden chill run through your body. You want to ask Lon what's happening, and realize you can't move.)

Cardaniel80: (It's as if your body has forgotten the signal for making any of your muscles move.)

Thantasy: [Jayne] <I don't know what's happened!!!!!>

Cardaniel80: (You're still alive, you know that. You can feel your heart pounding, healthy and strong. You're breathing. It's not that weakness from before the operation. It's more of a "gone-ness.")

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Good thing I'm in a doctor's office!>

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Don't panic!!!>

Cardaniel80: (You can't turn your head, but you were looking in Lon's direction, and you see him smiling. He knows exactly what's happening.)

Thantasy: [Jayne] <What is he smiling about??????>

Cardaniel80: (You try to talk, can't think how to do that either.)

Cardaniel80: [Lon] Don't get worried, J, it's only temporary. (He pulls out a small flat box with switches and buttons, like a fancy TV remote.)

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Temporary!!!!!!!!>

Cardaniel80: [Lon] I'll turn you back on in a few minutes. I just needed to make a little demonstration here.

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Turn me back on!!!!!!!!!!>

Cardaniel80: [Lon] Now, I never did get to be an electrical engineer, but I did learn a thing or two. Oh, I didn't design all this by myself. A friend from college who really did become a double-E, he's my partner in this.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] I don't know if you'd remember him. I'm not going to tell you who he is.

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Is this some kind of sick joke????>

Cardaniel80: (Lon stays in your field of vision. Your eyes are still blinking, but you can't shift your vision.)

Cardaniel80: [Lon] I'm sorry, I know you didn't sign a consent form for this (smirking), but I did add a little element to the standard surgery. No extra charge.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] I implanted a "nerve switch." That's what we decided to call it. It's part of your nervous system now.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] All the signals to your voluntary muscles pass along your spinal cord, you know... and now they all pass through this switch. When I turn the switch off... no voluntary movements. You can't do it no matter how hard you try. I'm sure you know that by now. I'm sure you've been trying. I have no way to tell, but you must be trying to find a way to make any movement at all.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] All the automatic systems are running smoothly, as you can tell. They all have their own independent wiring in the body, as I'm sure you know.

Thantasy: [Jayne] <YES, I PASSED ANATOMY!>

Cardaniel80: [Lon] Oh, well, that's not to say I don't have a little control over them too. Here's another switch, I'll just try this for a few seconds.

Cardaniel80: (At the movement of his finger, you feel another small jolt and... you can't breathe! Again, it's like the muscles, this time the lung muscles, have totally forgotten how to function. Without making any visible movement, you struggle to draw a breath for five seconds, ten...)

Cardaniel80: [Lon] I've done this operation four times already -- that makes ten patients in all, there are two other doctors involved in the partnership -- and all the previous ones were volunteers.

Thantasy: [Jayne] I will be your hat check girl or whatever.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] I guess that could be the right word, yeah.

Thantasy: [Jayne] I may even show up Thursday.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Let you have your way with me.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] Good for you, J! I'd be happier not having to kill you.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Hope that you remember to turn me back on when you're done.

Thantasy: [Jayne] But it isn't my choice.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Not like it was my choice when I was nineteen.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] I'm not under any illusions about that.

Thantasy: [Jayne] If this is what you really want, you've got it.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Not something freely given, something stolen.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] I know that, but I'm impressed with your reaction. You're adapting well.

Thantasy: [Jayne] If I decide not to come on Thursday.....

Thantasy: [Jayne] I suppose I should make sure I'm not driving a car.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] (Smiling) A sensible precaution, J.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Or doing anything else that I would hurt anybody if I suddenly dropped dead.

Thantasy: [Jayne] How much time will I have?

Cardaniel80: [Lon] For what?

Thantasy: [Jayne] If I don't show up, what?

Thantasy: [Jayne] Will you wait ten minutes before you turn me off for good?

Thantasy: [Jayne] I mean, do I have a grace period?

Thantasy: [Jayne] Does tardiness become a death penalty offense?

Cardaniel80: [Lon] Oh, let's say Thursday midnight.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] I want you to come over by 7. Midnight is the end of the grace period.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Well, five hours is generous.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Unexpected kindness.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] I expect to get the use of you for those full five hours. don't make me wait.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Well.....

Thantasy: [Jayne] I'm not the one MAKING you do much of anything.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] Glad you're being reasonable.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Thank you.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Amazing that you have the capacity to appreciate my ability to reason.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Pity you don't appreciate my freedom to make my own choices.

Thantasy: [Jayne] But I guess a girl can't have everything.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] There are lots of things I appreciate about you. Now, you run along home. I'm sure you've got a lot to think about. Oh, here's the address of the "Pleasure Palace," as you put it. Be there at 6 Tuesday.

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Takes the card bearing the address with some disdain>

Thantasy: [Jayne] Do you want to kiss me good-bye?

Thantasy: [Jayne] I'll stand here and let you do that.

Cardaniel80: [Lon] No, that won't be necessary. I'll wait till Thursday. After all, that's only a week away.

Thantasy: [Jayne] <Oh God! Only a week!>

Cardaniel80: [Lon] Oh, and you can wear your nurse's uniform on Tuesday at the brothel. The customers like that.

Thantasy: [Jayne] <MY NURSE'S UNIFORM!!!!!!>

Thantasy: [Jayne] If I don't do that, do I get switched off?

Thantasy: [Jayne] If I just show up in my civies, do I get punished?

Cardaniel80: [Lon] Nooo, that part's up to you. Just look nice.

Thantasy: [Jayne] Thank you.
